Alarming Pollution Measurements
Various sections of Delhi recorded an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the recommended level established by the World Health Organization.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and New Policy Shifts

The widespread use of firecrackers during the celebrations also initiated a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing deteriorating atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on pollutants traveling from neighboring India following the festivities.
Chronic Pollution Problem
The dangerously high levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a major challenge for over a decade and a half, with the problem showing no improvement.
Near Diwali, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the most severe readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the globally most contaminated city.
Diverse Contamination Contributors
This crisis in the city is attributed to a mix of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in adjacent regions of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, farmers routinely burn crop residue to prepare for next season, creating hazardous pollution that becomes contained over the city as winter air descends.

These hazardous conditions leads to elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can even lead to malignancies.
