The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
