A minimum of thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
